Healthy Dairy-Free Whipped Cream

Can we just have a moment of silence for how my life has forever been changed?
I’m serious. Can you just read that title again?
A healthy, non-dairy alternative to whipped cream? Really?

I had completely given up all hope of ever having another parfait with fruit and whipped cream and so many other amazing concoctions since going grain and dairy-free in February of 2011. Not that I am complaining or anything, I happen to love being healthy (no tummy pains and 10 lbs. lighter) since giving up dairy, but still! You know I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it from time to time.

Enter the amazing awesomeness of Coconut Milk.

Ah, this deserves another moment of silence.
Shhhh, I’m silencing! :-)

Found in the Asian foods section of your grocery story, us Paleo/Primal/Lactose intolerant folks who have no desire to eat highly processed, sugary cool whip have found our pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Isn’t it a pretty rainbow? (Yup, I’m in that kind of mood.)
So, I made a quick video to show you just how easy this is.
And it really is easy..
You know I don’t do hard.. because life is hard enough, it shouldn’t be hard to get awesome food, right?

I have just begun to dig in and play around with all the different possibilities this ingredient, in it’s many forms can offer, and I’m looking forward to coming up with some awesome foodstuffs! In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying it with a bowl of berries, or cherries.. yum! Or fresh pineapple, double yum! Or.. or.. yumness awaits at every turn, I can feel it. :-)

    When I read that line my mouth dropped open and everything else faded into the back ground. Could it be? I was held hostage in hope.

  2. Happy you finally found this wonderful treat Catrina!! It is quite yummy, and if you have an ice cream maker, you can whip up 2 cans of coconut milk in a blender with some fruit, vanilla, and if need sweetness some maple syrup or honey and mix it up in the ice cream maker for 30 minutes too for super frozen treat!!

    A word of caution however…the gums (xanthan, guar) that are found in most and this brand of coconut milk can cause some tummy distress. Look for the ones that don’t have these ingredients in them…there are a few out there. Golden Star is one, and if you have a Trader Joes, they have a light version and with a couple tsp of coconut oil added put’s the fat back in without the gummy stuff and they both work great as a whipped treat!! :-)


  3. I just tried this and I couldn’t even get past step 1. I put the milk in the fridge for 7+ hours, but even then it hadn’t separated. Next time should I just wait longer? Another thing is I used the ‘light’ version…

    Any helps, Catrina? I’m also hungry. For some coconut whipped cream.


    • Hi there, you definitely want to use the the ‘regular’ version vs. the ‘lite’ coconut cream but also, try and run it through a strainer to drain as much of the coconut water from the (thicker) milk. Then go ahead and mix up whatever is left according to the directions in the video. I have seen some success with using the entire can, when separation didn’t happen. I hope this helps. :-)


  4. I use this frequently and my husband loves it! Great topping for strawberries! I’ve also added drained crushed pineapple (in it’s own juice of course) and unsweetened coconut flakes after whipping the coconut milk cream to create something of a ‘pina colada’ type dessert. Love it!


  5. I love coconut milk, but I’ve simplified the process. I buy the Golden Star, which is thicker. I shake up the can and put it in the fridge to solidify then use it straight out of the can. I don’t bother with the whipping.
